It’s All About the Apps!

A recent switch to the IPhone has sparked an insatiable desire for Apps. As a freelance web designer I rely on my phone to keep in touch with clients at all times. My previous phone of choice was the Blackberry Curve. The full QWERTY keyboard and relative resilience were features that I drew me to the phone in the first place and became features that I thought I couldn’t live without. That is until I picked up an IPhone.

Right off the bat, it became clear that the IPhone was by far more superior in both speed and functionality. The mobile web was now usable and applications finally complimented my craft. If you are under the impression that the IPhone is a trendy gadget that is ideal for entertainment purposes, you are right. As I have recently discovered however, it is also an invaluable tool for business. Here is how I use the IPhone as an office away from the office.

Google Reader
  • Email – the email program syncs perfectly with my google apps account as well as my other email accounts.
  • Calendar – the calendar system also syncs with no extra effort on my part. I can enter an appointment on my computer or directly on the IPhone and it is in the system.
  • Maps – another native application that acts like a GPS. Switch between map or satellite view.
  • Beejive IM – one of the first apps to take advantage to push notifications. This multi account IM app will notify you when someone sends you an instant message.
  • TweetDeck – the mobile version picks up where the desktop version leaves off. My top choice for twitter wherever I am.
  • Facebook – still doesn’t support push notification, but you won’t be disappointed.
  • GV Mobile – you must have a google voice account to use this app and doesn’t support push notification.
  • Google Docs – see how I use Google Docs in my article about Google Apps. On the IPhone, you can edit your spreadsheets.
  • Reader – stay up to date with your RSS subscriptions.
  • Tasks – integrates with Google Apps, but doesn’t support push notification.
Google Reader
  • Vlingo – Vlingo for those that don’t have the 3GS
  • TWC – keep current on changing weather conditions, including severe weather alerts.
  • Jobs – like a timeclock to keep track of how much time you are spending on a project.
  • Analytics – track web statistics from your IPhone.
  • Media Temple – access your hosting account from your IPhone.
  • FTPOnTheGo – this app allows you to access your ftp account, download a file edit and upload the new file all from the comfort of your IPhone.
  • WhatTheFont – take a picture of a font and let WhatTheFont tell you the font type.
  • FontShuffle – a more inspirational font finder.
  • PalettesLite – a color palette creator.
  • Colors – very handy, allows you to create a color palette based on a photo.
Google Reader
  • FREE Wi-Fi- locates Free Wi-Fi hot spots in your area.
  • Google Mobile – search Google with your voice.
  • Digg
  • del.icio.us
  • Facebook
