A copywriter aims to help a business by writing about a product or service while informing the audience. And there are a variety of formats a copywriter can utilize: advertisements, Web site language, brochures, invitations, direct mail pieces, advertorials and many more.
So why should a business hire an outside copywriter? It’s simple: we’re not experts. Sound like a recipe for disaster? Not in the least. The businesses are usually populated by experts in their field. Experts tend to take for granted what others know — or assume that the readers will already have an understanding of the subject. Therefore, experts can quickly gloss over complicated matters or omit important facts when they assume it’s common knowledge.
Since a copywriter knows less about the topic than the experts, we are forced to research and ask questions to process and understand the subject. A copywriter can then take that info and turn it into accessible language for the audience.
That’s what copywriters do: write for all readers with accessible, helpful, informative — and not exclusionary — language.
